Don’t Let Cockroaches Invade Your House

if you have a family or are single and happen to enjoy entertaining than you are always aware of the potential embarrassment that can occur if you hear a hissing, clicking or chirping sound in your home followed by a disagreeable smell. You may not know what the insect or pest is that has invaded your home but you know immediately it is not a welcome guest. The sound is that of a cockroach and the unfortunate thing about this insect is that they come by themselves.

Cockroaches can enter your home through drain pipes, open doors, cracks, vents, etc. They need food, water and warm areas to live so your home is the ideal living situation. Most homeowners consider the cockroach a pest that they can deal with on their own with the use of over the counter pest control products. This is an incorrect assessment because the facts are that most cockroaches and their eggs are resilient to the pest control products that can be sold to the public. Moreover, when you see one cockroach and kill it that does not mean your cockroach problem is over.

If you only see one cockroach in a drawer or on the floor that usually means that the cockroach was pushed out of its surroundings in your home because there was no more space for that particular cockroach. You need to find out where the rest of the cockroaches are living and for that you should contact a pest removal professional.

Don’t waste your valuable time searching for the potential home of the cockroaches and then spraying them with an over the counter pest product that has limited effectiveness. Contact Noel’s Pest control and let the experts eliminate your cockroach problem so you don’t have to worry about being embarrassed by a cockroach when you have family or friends over at your home.s

Living with Cockroaches:

Some people do not seem to bother about a few cockroaches, but there are good reasons to control them. Cockroaches feed on bits of food and garbage and can carry microbes when walking on the kitchen surface and dishes. These microbes could poison you with food, and expose you and your family to other diseases. Another reason to worry is because some people living in cockroach infested areas develop allergies that can trigger asthma.

Species of cockroaches:

There are two mains species of cockroaches found in houses: the German cockroach (Blattella germanica), and the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). German cockroaches are mostly found in kitchens and bathrooms. American cockroaches are often found in homes but are sometimes found in old buildings that have steam heating.

Description and biological cycle

The German cockroach is the specie mostly found in houses. Adult cockroaches are about 1.5 cm., Have two dark stripes along the area of the shield present behind the head. The immature stages, or “nymphs,” are smaller and darker than the adult ones, and the nymphs have a light brown streak along the middle area of the back. As they reproduce very quickly, German cockroaches are very difficult to control. A single female can produce an infestation of thousands of new cockroaches in less than a year.
German cockroaches require heat, food, and moisture, which is why they are more common in kitchens and bathrooms. Preferred hideouts or shelters include cracks and crevices under sinks and toilets, under refrigerators, dishwashers, and ovens, next to trash cans, and inside kitchen cabinets and pantries. When cockroach populations are very large or lacking in food, they may be present in bedrooms or other areas of the house. Cockroaches can move from one room to another, or to contiguous apartments by utility pipes and cables.

The American Cockroach

Periplaneta americana: It is the largest cockroach in homes and premises. It can measure up to 4.5 cm. And is dark reddish in color. They have clearer areas in their pronotum, developed wings and are capable of flying.
Habitat: it inhabits the subsoil and sewage system. Their flight capacity allows them to reach higher areas, being common to find them in food preparation areas.
Food: Omnivorous par excellence.
Reproduction: By ootecas (capsules) containing between 13 and 15 embryos, producing an ootheca every 30-60 days. Newborns can reach sexual maturity in 23 weeks. An adult can live for almost a year and a half, with their reproductive potential above 800 descendants a year.
Access routes: Generally they come from the subsoil and exterior drainage and their capacity of flight allows direct access through windows and terraces.
Their ability to fly allows them to move quickly through the air from one area to another, making it difficult to control them.

Cockroach habits

Cockroaches are more active at night and live in groups. By day, they live in hollows and cracks that are dark and damp. Cockroaches also love spending time on porous surfaces, such as wood and paperboard because they can fill these surfaces with their scent which attracts other cockroaches to these same areas. Cockroaches eat anything that is organic bits of food, grease, garbage, wool and cotton fabrics, cardboard and paper towel resistor. Cockroaches prefer to live near their source of food and water.
Humidity, food, and places to hide are reasons why German cockroaches are often found in the kitchen. You look on the floor below and behind the pile of washing machines, stoves and other appliances. You inspect all the holes on the kitchen cabinets. Especially look for cockroach stains that can be on the wall, in cabinets, near holes, cracks, and corners. Where there are many cockroach stains, you can be sure that many cockroaches spend time in those areas. Examine the roof columns inside the house, especially above the cooking and washing areas. Check behind the refrigerator and around door seals.
A careful inspection should reveal “good places” where most cockroaches are living. Focus control efforts in these areas.
Bathrooms: Humidity is important here. Look for tubing that has leaks of water or sweat that may be adding to the problem of cockroaches. Check the tub and showerhead and look for ceramic panels or fiberglass cloths that have water leaks going behind the wall. Check spill and drain holes; Cockroaches will also live in these areas.

More precautionary measures

Get rid of moisture

Due to the fact that cockroaches need moisture, getting rid of moisture sources will help to eliminate them. Repair water leaks, insulate the tubing and seal gaps around sinks, tubs, and tubing to prevent water from flowing behind walls. Make the grout around the tubs and showers. Seal holes around kitchen surfaces and fenders behind the dishwasher stack in the kitchen. Clean up spills and do not allow water to remain in the dishes left on the sink.

Eliminate food sources

The kitchen is a good place for German cockroaches, because it is warm, humid, and has enough food. Keep your kitchen clean always and do not let grease, crumbs, or stuff pile up anywhere.
Change and carve stoves and refrigerators and around, under, and behind them. Clean all kitchen surfaces, especially between them and appliances. Store all food in tightly closed containers which are resistant to cockroaches. Do not leave pet food dishes on the floor at night.
Rubbish is attractive to cockroaches. Keep trash, manure, and items for recycling in tightly closed containers. Air them daily, preferable at night, because cockroaches are more active at that time. Wash and dry dishes, pots, and pans immediately and do not allow dirty dishes to remain on the surface of the kitchen sink or dishwasher at night.
Cockroaches can live under badly adjusted refrigerator door seals. Repair them.

Remove possible hideouts

Cockroaches usually live in tight spaces. Do not store paper bags, containers, carton, magazines, newspapers, equipment boxes or clothes on the floor, and do not force paper bags between appliances or inside cabinets.
If there are holes in the kitchen cabinets or between pieces of wood gunsmiths, clean, vacuum and seal them with silicon glue).
Seal little gaps that are possible roads of cockroaches to your home
If you live in an apartment building, pay special attention to the walls that join other units.

Repair gaps and cracks in basement walls and floors

A wool fiber can be put into the holes as a quick fix. Cover the drains in the basement and floors with metallic pans. Tighten loose windows and seal the holes around the doors.
Seal gaps around gas, and heating pipes, inside and out.
Do not forget the gaps around the heating counters, air ducts, electrical boxes and temporary roof ceilings.
Cockroach breeding lives in very small holes. In extreme cases, when there are no gaps or cracks available, German cockroaches can live under the labels of canned foods and eat the paper labels. To remove these hiding places, remove the labels and use a marker to mark the contents.
Outside, remove debris and arrange the woods near the building. Move the firewood and trash cans away from the building as well.

If you have a large infestation or desire a total eradication of the cockroaches, you would need the services of professionals. If insecticides are needed, the professionals are also trained to apply them safely.
